It is sacrilege to some Apple fanboys. It is also something that none of Apple's competitors have been able to claim as "magical" day in early 2010.
But when Microsoft unveiled the Microsoft surface tablet (actually a couple of them) on Monday, the software company clearly had an ultimate goal: to make a tablet that is better than the iPad.
In most standards, Apple has crushed rivals tablets have tried to compete feature for feature. No single tablet running Google's Android system has gained much traction (except the smallest, cheapest Amazon Kindle Fire) and playbook BlackBerry maker RIM, reaching the market with a thud.
And Microsoft's previous attempts to build Apple products as witnesses - the iPod-Zune-copy have failed.
Unlike some competitors rushed, Microsoft took its time getting into the game compressed. Earlier this year, the company launched Windows 8 operating system, software that is optimized for mobile and manufacturers such as Samsung and Asus are already building around tablets. However, Microsoft clearly wants to control at least one version of the hardware, a movement has largely shunned during its history.
And Microsoft Surface seems determined to get this right. So the question remains - will Microsoft Surface be the tablet that finally gives Apple a run for their money?
Details are sketchy on the Microsoft surface - no price or release date has been announced, and information about applications is rare. But there are at least five characteristics of Steve Ballmer, CEO and friends presented on Monday that could make the Microsoft surface better than the iPad.
Keyboard
One frustration for many users of the iPhone touch screen devices and other is the keyboard. While you may get some business to take advantage of the points on a flat screen, most acknowledge that it is impossible to access email and other written documents as fast as with physical keys.
Sure, there are others you can buy keyboards to add on the iPad, but can be awkward.
The keyboard on the Microsoft surface is part of the touch cover, which is connected to the magnets and the flip open. Be a version with pressure-sensitive keys and another with flat keys, calls a more traditional type cover.
They are both sleeker and slimmer than many third-party offers for the kids ipad case. The touch cover is 3 millimeters thick, and cover type is 5mm.
And for style-sensitive among us, the Microsoft Surface comes in a variety of colors, including black, pink, red and blue.
Some people view Microsoft Surface's inclusion of a keyboard as a major selling point.
"If it works well, the keyboard -- which I got to inspect at great length but not actually type on -- is going to be the Surface's killer attraction," wrote Slate's Farhad Manjoo.
"Many people are frustrated with the iPad, because writing about it is an important task. They want to use as a desktop in every way, but are blocked by the input method.... If Microsoft Surface ships with keyboard - and if Microsoft marketed the device as a tablet that allows you to work a little - it could be a great success."
Add the Microsoft Surface's touch panel and built-in "kickstand", and you have the characteristics current usability Cases do not have.

Apple has made such a compact, stylish tablet that many of its competitors look chunky by comparison. That is not true of the Microsoft surface, at least when it was demonstrated Monday.

Windows surface RT is a fraction of a millimeter that the IPAD anticoagulant (9.3 vs. 9.4) whereas the heavier Microsoft surface for Windows 8 Pro be of 13.5 millimeters. The RT weighs about the same as the iPhone (which is less than an ounce heavier), while the Pro will be around 2 pounds.

Power
Especially with the Pro Windows 8, Microsoft Surface has set out to blur the line between the tablet and the new wave of ultrabooks light, thin and its predecessor, Apple's MacBook Air. The tablets have always been a hybrid floating somewhere between a smartphone and a laptop, the best option to play games, surf the Web and consumption of media. Microsoft Surface wants the area to be something you can actually do some work on.
The Microsoft Surface Pro model will run Windows on an Intel Core i5 and come with up to 128 gigabytes of internal memory (the iPhone currently stands at 64).
USB ports
Both versions of the Microsoft surface come with two USB ports (2.0 in the roundtable and 3.0 Pro faster in Windows). The lack of ports has been one of the few persistent complaints about the iPad.
These ports open up the possibility of extra storage, printing and other external capabilities that should be easier and quicker than the workarounds iPad users need involving cloud storage, Wi-Fi connections and the like.
Xbox SmartGlass
The role of SmartGlass Xbox, Microsoft launched the E3 Video Game Expo this month, will work with the iPhone and Android tablets.
But it is hard to imagine Microsoft's optimization technology for their own piece of hardware.
The system seeks to make the Xbox a central device in the room - which may or may not even be used for video games.
Connect a smartphone or tablet with the Xbox, which in turn connects to the television. When connecting devices, users can watch a movie on the television to get extra stuff on your tablet. They could also begin to enjoy a game or movie on the table, then transfer to a TV - or vice versa.
If the function is in the center on the Microsoft surface, will be a step in the attempt by Microsoft to ensure that all user devices together within the system's flexibility of Windows 8.
